Castlegreen care home resident Mary unveils new mural

Niddrie is looking brighter thanks to a new mural chosen with the help of residents at Castlegreen Care Home.

The Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership-run home is near the new colourful mural to depict the history of the area. Residents helped to choose the theme of the artwork and one resident, Mary, was asked to cut the ribbon at the unveiling last week.

Designed by artist Calum Carr, it replaces old graffiti which had become an eyesore.

A community group was set up to organise funds for the work with residents taking part in a consultation and choosing a historical theme for the art piece.

Activity leader at the Castlegreen Care Home, Amy Steele said: “We walk with residents to the local shop every day for a paper and they would often comment on the graffiti wall and how awful it looked.

“They were delighted when they heard about the scheme to fix it up, led by local man Calum Baird. He included the residents in his ideas and they took part in a survey to pick the winning design.

“The new mural is beautiful and many residents went along to the unveiling with Mary being chosen to do a speech and cut the ribbon. She was over the moon to be chosen for the honour and is now encouraging other residents to take part in a daily walk past the mural.

“It has really brightened the area and boosted the local community.”
