Living Independently

Community equipment and minor adaptations

The Community Equipment Loan Service is a partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council, East Lothian Council, Midlothian Council and NHS Lothian. We provide, deliver, install, repair, maintain and recycle a range of equipment helping people of all ages to live independently.

The type of equipment we provide includes

  • profiling beds
  • mobile hoists
  • toileting aids
  • bathing/showering aids
  • mobility products.

Our team of healthcare professionals includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists and district nurses, who will talk to you and asses if you need equipment. To talk to someone about getting an assessment, contact Social Care Direct or your local health and social care contact centre.

Within Edinburgh, you can also self-refer for minor adaptations such as grabrails, handrails and banisters, which we will arrange to be delivered and installed in your house free of charge.

You can use the link below to return items to the Community Equipment Loan Service or learn where you can drop off the items yourself. We also offer a click and collect service so equipment can be picked up from or returned to ATEC24.

If you have used the community equipment loan service, we would like to hear from you. Please use the form below to give us your feedback.

Living Made Easy is an impartial advice and information website about daily living equipment and other aspects of independent living. If you would like to find out more about the types of equipment that can be purchased privately, you can visit the Living Made Easy website.

Equipment breakdown – engineer support contact details

If you have equipment on loan from us and it breaks down or stops working, please call an engineer who will discuss and try to resolve the issue over the phone.

If that doesn’t work, the engineer will visit you to repair the equipment. Anyone can make the call, whether you are a citizen, carer, family member, neighbour or professional.

The contact details will vary depending on what type of equipment you have at home.
